The most common extension to a house is the awnings that we erect in our front porch. In recent years awnings have become become more advanced and we see many different types of designs that are much more attractive than the dull metal awnings that we are so used to. The most common that we see now are the traditional metal awnings and the more modern polystyrene awnings that can be shaped into various cuttings to fit in to the design of the house.
Disadvantages Of Polystyrene Awnings
This kind of awnings looks nice but there is a disadvantage. It is not exactly heat resistant. Though it is translucent and standing underneath such an awning gives you a sort of nice feel, it get pretty hot on a sunny day.
Another disadvantage is, after a few years, fungus starts to grow and it looks rather dirty with all the dust stuck on the top. This is made worse by the fact that you can see the dirt and it is not easy for the house owner to wash the awnings.
Disadvantages Of Metal Awnings
Metal Awnings too has it’s disadvantages. Being metal, when something hits on it, the sound could be quite loud. So when it rains, even if it is not too heavy, do expect the noise. Can be quite disturbing if you are trying to watch your favorite TV program.
On the bright side, since metal awnings are very well coated, they seldom rust. These awnings will probably lasts you more than 20 years. However, rust will occur on the structure itself and you will need to give it a new coat of paint every couple of years. But then, if you can afford it, many household will request for a stainless steel structure instead of mild steel ones. The cost could be significantly higher though.
Other Type Of Awnings
Canvas awnings are also very nice and elegant to look at. However, it is not very durable and tend to tear after a few years under the sun and rain. So if you prefer to have canvas awnings, be prepared to have them replaced every few years.
There are advantages to these type of awnings though. One very obvious one will be felt on a rainy day. These kind of awning are quite “quiet” unlike the metal awnings that makes an awful lot of noise when rain starts drumming on it.
Use Normal Roof Tiles Instead Of Awnings
My recommendation will be to use roof tiles as an extension if you plan to cover up your front porch. It is very durable. You can complement the structure to fit your existing roof, it is cooling on a sunny day and quiet on a rainy day. The cost of constructing this extension also don’t differ much from those fancy awnings.
